Commodities of Empire

Published August 6, 2008 by Rachel Laudan

While we’re on the subject of resources, the commodities of empire project is very useful if you are interested in nineteenth century food, whether trade, processing, or marketing.  They give open access to their papers in pdf.  A large proportion of them have to do with food. And they take a welcome global perspective.

    Rachel,
This is very interesting. Is there any such similar project for the neolithic period’s foods?

BTW, i recently wrote a post on the Doha Round of the WTO agreement, it will be great if you can react to it on our blog. There is a vibrant discussion going on there.

The link of the post is here

What a coincidence! A couple of days ago I downloaded and read WP 7 - Deana Heath, ‘Obscenity, Empire and Global Networks’ (2008). Interesting discussion about the ways in which ‘obscenity’ became an object to control / combat throughout the empire.

This got me thinking - rather perversely - shouldn’t someone now begin to research and analyse ‘Obesity, Empire and Global Networks’? Though, who / what the ‘Empire’ would be, I’m not sure. but Global Networks might be international agribusiness / and so forth?

Rajagopal, see my recent post. And the comment will come soon.

I wish there were a site like this for the Neolithic but I have not run across one. If anyone does, let me know.

A coincidence indeed. There are so many topics that could bear this kind of analysis.
